At 16 I was getting a minimum of 25 strokes of the cane - my brothers and I were very fit and athletic but very unruly and hard to handle - we needed hard punishment - indeed, we looked for it and would have been disappointed in the old man if he hadn't delivered. It happened down through the generations in the family so I suppose it was in our DNA
